Insider’s Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance

Jerry Yang

Motorcycle maintenance is the key factor to the life of the equipment. Similar to an automobile, motorcycles require much of the same maintenance. The more routine maintenance practices completed generally equals added life to your investment. Maintenance practices for a motorcycle include: oil changes, fuel filter changes, new spark plugs, new tires, and new brakes.

Now if that sounds familiar, I am sure it is. Like I previously stated, motorcycle maintenance is similar to automotive maintenance, but there are a few key factors that separate the two. So just like automobiles, motorcycles have scheduled intervals for each routine maintenance task. The engine of a motorcycle is much smaller than the engine of your car or truck, therefore the intervals of maintenance are going to occur sooner and at less mileage intervals than that of a car.

Some motorcycles may actually have hour intervals for maintenance practices rather than mileage intervals depending on the size of the bike. Now some people believe that if their motorcycle is stored away and not being used, then it does not require maintenance. This is absolutely incorrect. A motorcycle is similar to an automobile being stored. Certain storage maintenance practices must be completed in-order to properly store the piece of equipment.

Also, when storing a motorcycle, it is a good practice to actually start the cycle every once in a while to allow the fluids to circulate. This also keeps the seals in good condition. The seals can go bad easy if the motorcycle sits for a long period of time without being operated. It only takes a few minutes to go into the garage and start your bike. Doing this will save you much time and money come next spring.

Motorcycle maintenance can determine the life of your costly investment. I maintain my motorcycle just as I maintain my car. I do not want to have my family stranded on the side of the road, nor do I want my bike to be stranded in the garage. Routine maintenance practices can easily be completed at home by most enthusiasts with little to no automotive skills at all.

You first have to invest in a jack stand for your bike and then a complete set of tools. Working on your motorcycle is much safer than working on your automobile. It just takes patience, time, and a manual to be successful. The tools will pay for themselves over time. Being proactive and maintaining your motorcycle as you do your automobile will protect your investment and give you many years of seasonal joy.

Jerry knows the key to lasting motorcycles and automobiles is keeping up with regular maintenance. To that end, it’s important to use things like a cross reference guide for spark plugs when you’re performing work on your bike. This will ensure it continues to run smoothly.
